The Embassy of Saint Lucia and the Saint Lucian diaspora came together to celebrate the nation’s 40th Independence Anniversary with several events held throughout the greater Washington DC Metropolitan area.
The Embassy additionally hosted a reception in honor of the occasion at the Patio Azteca of the Organization of American States (OAS) on the evening of Monday, Feb. 25th, 2019. Dignitaries from the diplomatic community joined in the celebration which featured a sampling of the Chairman Reserve line of rums provided by Saint Lucia Distillers Ltd. His Excellency Anton Edmunds shared brief remarks highlighting Saint Lucia’s journey to independence through its noted achievements and challenges and reminded the diaspora of their importance to the nation’s advancement. H.E. Carlos Alberto Calles Castillo, Ambassador and Permanent Representative of El Salvador to the OAS also shared his remarks and referenced the nation’s historical contribution to the history of the Western Hemisphere through Jean Baptiste Bideau, iconic Saint Lucian martyr who saved the life of the Liberator Simon Bolivar.
